How the coloring book page count calculator works
Three different numbers get called "pages", and mixing them up breaks pricing, gutter and cover math:
- Designs — the coloring images you create.
- PDF pages — what KDP counts: designs + blank backs + front/back matter.
- Printed sheets — physical paper; two PDF pages per sheet.
In single-sided mode each design gets a blank back so markers can't ruin the next image, and the calculator adds one alignment blank when needed so the first design starts on a right-hand page. The full arithmetic is shown with the result so you can audit it. The final PDF page count is the number to feed into the spine and margin calculators.
Worked example: 40 designs, single-sided
2 front matter + 40 designs + 40 blank backs + 1 back matter = 83 PDF pages (42 printed sheets). That clears KDP's 24-page minimum and the 80-page spine-text threshold, and sits in the 24–150 gutter tier (0.375" minimum inside margin).
Common mistakes
- Marketing "100 pages" that are 50 designs. Decide whether your cover copy counts designs or pages, and stay consistent with what the customer receives.
- Calculating the spine from the design count. The spine uses final PDF pages — nearly double the design count in single-sided books.
- Forgetting front and back matter. Title and copyright pages shift every design and change the total.
- Landing just under a threshold. 78–79 pages is a bad place to stop: one more sheet unlocks spine text safely.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a blank back count as a KDP page?
- Yes. KDP counts every PDF page, including intentionally blank ones. A 40-design single-sided book with blank backs has at least 80 interior pages before front and back matter.
- How many PDF pages are 40 single-sided designs?
- 80 pages: each design page is followed by a blank back. Add your front matter (title page, copyright) and back matter, plus possibly one alignment blank so the first design lands on a right-hand page.
- What is KDP's minimum paperback page count?
- 24 pages. If your plan comes out below 24, add designs or matter pages until you reach the minimum — KDP will not accept a shorter paperback interior.
- When can I add spine text?
- From roughly 79 pages, with KDP's own wording inconsistent at exactly 79 ("at least 79" vs "more than 79"). Plan for 80+ pages if spine text matters to you.
