How the 300 DPI coloring page checker works
Effective DPI = pixels ÷ printed inches, per axis, taking the smaller of the two. Metadata DPI is ignored on purpose: re-saving a file "at 300 DPI" changes a label, not the pixel count. The checker also reports the largest size the image can print at 300 DPI, and how many pixels are missing for your chosen area.
Everything runs in your browser — the image is decoded locally to read its dimensions and is never uploaded, stored or logged.
Worked example: 1024 × 1024 AI output on 8.5" × 11"
1024 ÷ 8.5 ≈ 120 DPI wide and 1024 ÷ 11 ≈ 93 DPI tall — the effective resolution is 93 DPI, far below 300, even if the file's metadata says otherwise. At 300 DPI that image can print at most about 3.4" × 3.4"; a full 8.5×11 bleed page needs 2588 × 3375 px.
Common mistakes
- Trusting metadata DPI. "300 DPI" in the file info proves nothing about printable resolution.
- Stretching small AI images to full page. Default AI outputs (1024–2048 px) need upscaling or smaller placement for print.
- Checking against the wrong area. Full-bleed art must be measured against the bleed canvas, not the trim.
- Upscaling and assuming quality. Upscaling adds pixels, not detail — inspect lines at 100% zoom after upscaling.
Frequently asked questions
- Does changing image metadata make it 300 DPI?
- No. The DPI value stored in a file is just a note — it adds no pixels. Effective resolution is pixels divided by the physical print size. A 1024 px wide image printed 8.5" wide is ~120 DPI no matter what the metadata says.
- How many pixels does an 8.5×11 coloring page need?
- 2550 × 3300 px at the trim size, or 2588 × 3375 px including bleed, at 300 DPI. Larger is fine; smaller means the effective DPI drops below 300.
- Why does KDP report low resolution?
- KDP checks the effective resolution of images at their printed size. If a small image is stretched across a full page, its pixels-per-inch fall below 300 and the previewer flags it — shrink the print size or use a larger source image.
- Should I calculate DPI from trim size or live area?
- From the area the image actually covers. A full-bleed page uses the bleed canvas (e.g. 8.625" × 11.25"); artwork placed inside margins uses its own printed width and height — this checker supports both via the print-area option.
